Separation and Filtration

There are many kinds of soils and it would be necessary to know them to choose the correct materials in a project decision.

Some times it is necessary to do a separations between different kind of soil because of theirs different mechanical properties and thus to guarantee that they wont be mixed. The problem becomes remarkable with in the presence of water. Water can promote the particle interchange between different types of soil.

Geotextile is the best solution to take the control effects of particle migration, it can maintain integrity and the good operation between a layer and another one.

In the case of pavement structures, we can find:

• Fine ground migration within the granular ground, diminishing its drain capacity.
• Mixture between granular within the fine ground, affecting its resistant capacity.

Geotextile becomes a barrier to avoid that particle migration between layers, without preventing the passage of the water.

A factor to be taken into account is the raw material of the geotextile (polyester or polypropylene). Chemical soil composition could accelerate to degradation of the geotextile.

Other kind of geotextile uses are:

• To protect to the geomembrane to avoid some edges stones that can damage them by punching.
• To work as anti-vegetative layer, avoiding the growth of no wished vegetation.
