Soft soil stabilization system and approach ramp

Project:

Soft soil stabilization system and a approach ramp to get a platform for a parking lot in Convention center facilities

Place:

Tampico, Tamaulipas

Problem:

A construction company needed a 3.0 m height platform and a ramp at the back side of the new Convention Center in Tampico. This platform will be used as a parking lot for many vehicles that arrive there at the load area. The new Convention Center is near to the “Carpinteros” lagoon. The problem was related with soft soil. This is a zone of soil with little bearing capacity. By such reason it was needed an economic solution to build the platform in low times to be able to finish the work in the predicted times.

Solution:

The first option was a platform based on a deep concrete foundation, but it was an expensive solution. The second option and the best one was about the construction of a platform using ACE GG-20-II and ACE GG 30-II geogrid. A polyester geotextile was settled, it was used to separate layers between the existing soil and the improved one for embankments. The retaining walls and the approach ramp were constructed with ACE GG 60-I geogrid to reinforce all the vertical retaining walls. . A GMG 512 geocomposite was installed as a drainage system to alleviate the hydrostatic pressures within the walls, caused by the filtrations in the body of the embankment.
